I do think that they could do a better job at portraying female characters in their series, but as a woman who enjoys Death Note and Platinum End, I gotta look for good representation somewhere in the story! I hope this changes perspective a little bit, and I hope to see some more bad ass female characters in the future! :)(less) (hide spoiler)]

Okay, in the beginning when he was only killing evil people that wasn't so bad but now he's killing innocent people. And then when he killed someone I liked and I'm guessing killed the person that would have come the closest to catching him, I wanted to scream bloody murder! I mean that person was smart and first and then they got their stupid on and he had them. Although, I'm hoping that in the next book that person will be like: Surprise! He didn't get me. Sigh....
Anyhoo, I'm loving these books (like I said) and can't wait for more!

If anyone can give me more recommendations for Manga I would appreciate it. I have gotten a few from my Goodreads friend, Petrik, but I'm still looking for me. Hook me up with lists people!

After verifying that the notebook works and initially being terrified of its god-like abilities, Light begins to consider the possibilities of the Death Note's abilities and sets out to create a utopian world without crime, killing numerous high-profile Japanese criminals, before eventually targeting international criminals and felons around the world. Five days after discovering the notebook, Light is visited by Ryuk, a "Shinigami," beings inspired by the Japanese god of death and the Death Note's previous owner. Ryuk, who is invisible to anyone who has not touched the Death Note, reveals that he dropped the notebook into the human world out of boredom and is amused by Light's actions.
"Light thinks he's put an end to his troubles with the FBI--by using the Death Note to kill off the FBI agents working the case in Japan! But one of the agents has a fiancee who used to work in the Bureau, and now she's uncovered information that could lead to Light's capture. To make matters worse, L has emerged from the shadows to work directly with the task force headed by Light's father. With people pursuing him from every direction, will Light get caught in the conflux?"--Page 4 of cover.

I'm actually not sure how to review manga??? So I'm just going to list some things I particularly enjoyed in this volume.
THINGS I LIKED:
• The art, as always, is A+
• We get WAY more of "L" in this book...and he's like this detective recluse who's a bit odd, too honestly. Like he doesn't sit normally on chairs and he's self-confessed childish and he has so much messy hair. (What? I like his hair.)
• ACTUALLY "L" IS JUST REALLY ADORABLE.
• Also Light is adorable too. In a psychotic sort of way. He's really going dark side now (har har considering his name) and is under WAY more pressure.
• I'm under pressure.
• THIS WHOL BOOK IS PRESSUREFUL.
• I'm actually terrified of Light getting caught, but kind of hoping "L" is smart enough at the same time????? Help me. I'm conflicted.
• There was a TON of deducing in the book which I freaking loved. (Although it nearly had a tendency to monologue too much. At one point I found myself blinking and going "huh" to all of "L's" analysis. But whatever. My brain caught up eventually.)
• Light's little sister continues to be adorable.
• I feel like Light isn't doing much studying for college at this point.
• I like that the death god is addicted to apples. #relatable
• I need more.
• MOOOOOOORE.
And smart me (yay) actually borrowed TWO books from the library so I have the next to read right now. Which is really good, because this book ended a bit mid-thought. Anyway, it was solidly brilliant and clever and I can't wait to read more!!

Story : ★★★.75
As already mentioned, I love the dual perspective. I am not quite sure if I am Team-L or Team-Light, quite yet. Morally, I side with L, but can you imagine how interesting it would be if Light started going more and more chaotic? Plot-wise, that would be fascinating in terms of possibilities, and character-wise it would be super engaging. I can't quite give this the full 4 star rating for story, though because I find it odd how fast things are moving for the police force: the fact that they are so intense about some aspects and how they come to some conclusions really fast. I just sense a bit of convenience that I can't shake away. The best part by far, however, was the little segment with Raye's (the FBI agent) fiancee Naomi. She was so smart and then the fact that she was manipulated by Light, built up his character, meanwhile making me attached to Naomi!
Writing : ★★★.75
The writing also improved a lot, yet I am not quite sure if to the extent that I would like (but again time and translation is a factor). No longer are the conversations as awkward (and one of the jokes was fantastic: essentially after seeing that Light can sew, Ryuk remarks that he must be popular with the ladies. To this, Light says that he is, but not because of sewing and that it is his looks that count. Then he asks if Ryuk is not popular with the ladies and Ryuk's face is priceless!!). A lot of room for improvement, but I am not complaining at all. This time I got the jokes!
Sidenote - when starting this out, I thought Ryuk would be a totally different character, right now he is one probably my favorite! <3

The plot development in this Manga series has far surpassed my expectations. I still find it phenomenal that so much has been packed into so little text! Tsugumi Ohba, you have me in awe! This is the second volume in the Death Note series and continues following the story of teenager, Light Yagami, who is the current owner of the Death Note - a magical notebook that can be used to kill all those whose names are written within the pages. He also inherits a Shinigami death god as his accomplice until he has either died himself or he has filled the pages of the notebook.
The plot progression in this novel gave this an entirely different feel from the first installment. We were introduced to new characters, the mysterious L from the first volume was revealed to us and we got a more in-depth look into the minds of Light's enemies, who are the police force, which includes his own father.
It is a unique perspective to read about a murderer and yet feel totally aligned to his cause. There are no definite binaries as the 'bad' guys are the police and our 'good' guy is a serial killer. Both are good and both are bad, which highlights the reliability of our protagonist and brings into question the morality of our anti-villain and whether his cause is actually as just as we initially believed it to be.

L was only 99.9% of the stars😌
The rest of it was this freaking manga and how freaking smart Light is. My brain cannot. It's amazing.
One of the elements of Death Note that makes it so engrossing is the chess-like battle of wits between Light Yagami and L (who goes by a few names). You can compare this psychological battle to Sherlock Holmes and his rival Moriarty. If you haven't read the series, you're probably thinking "why doesn't Light just use the Death Note to kill L then." But that's the beauty of the story, as the Death Note's rules create restrictions on how Light can act.

Again, I continue to be surprised by how quickly this is all progressing. L is figuring things out extremely quickly. Still, it's such a great concept and the plot is really being well developed and driven forward. However, I will say this volume ended a bit abruptly.
Also, such a non-important issue, but it bugs me to no end when the text randomly is shoved close to the edge of the speech bubbles instead of centered.
Pretty good but not quite as engrossing as volume 1. It was more slower paced and there didn't seem to be a whole lot of development - Light was still killing people, L was still trying to catch him out, people were still wondering WTF was going on.

I didn't find Light as interesting either. I liked that he had an agenda and purpose in the first one — he wanted to only kill criminals (for the supposed sake of justice and creating a better world) but in this one he was too high on power and he just killed anyone who got in his way even if they were innocent. I would have liked a bit more conflict or depth in his decision to kill off twelve FBI agents. His blase 'they need to be dead because I can't let them catch me' attitude was a bit cartoonish and dull. He just didn't seem all that layered or complex in this one.
L wasn't what I expected — he was cool and calm in the first volume but he turned out to be so awkward and weird. I still liked him though.
Watori was a surprise. Really? He's an old white guy? I thought he was meant to be L's young badarse sidekick but he was more like a fuddy-duddy butler. Unimpressed.
I hope Naomi (the missing FBI agent) turns out to be alive, she was smart, and it seemed like she could hold her own. Every other female character apart from her have been silly.
All in all, a decent read… Just not as interesting as the first one.

4/5 StarsIn this second installment, Light Yagami has continued his plight to rid the world of crime and criminals. However, now that the American FBI is working with his homeland government, what lengths will he go to in order to hide his identity? Is Light becoming even more out of control. Tag along as this story gets even darker and more twisted as Light and his Shinigami friend travel even further down the rabbit hole.
I'm really glad that I started this series. Although it's not quite a 5-star read for me, I'm really enjoying it so far. I can't wait to dive into book 3.
The storyline in this second installment gets even darker than the first one (if that was possible). This is not a tale for the faint of heart. However, I love that about this series. The story is so delectably dangerous. I found myself flipping the pages to find out what was going to happen next. There are plenty of twists and turns to satisfy hungry readers. Some of them were a bit predictable, but they were executed so well, that the predictability didn't bother me much. I also think the ability for me to predict some of the plot twists was because this series was meant for a younger adult audience. But, that didn't stopper any of my enjoyment.
One thing that enhances the plot, like always, are the characters. I really love all the characters in this book. They're interesting and unique, responding to the chain of events each in their own way. Light has really started to develop even more. I'm discovering just what a psychopath he really is, even if he thinks he has good intentions. I think the Shinigami is my favorite character, though. He's so nonchalant about everything and just along for the ride. Plus, he's uber mysterious, and that is definitely an aspect that keeps me reading. I want to know more about this mythical race.
The art remains the same, which is a good thing, since I really like the style and the way it brings the story to life. I don't have too much to say about it other than it's still great and enhances the reader experience.
One final thing that I'm really enjoying about this series is that so much is open for your own interpretations. There are a lot of political ideas being thrown around, but no clear cut line of who's right and what's wrong. I love that there are so many opinions flying around. Although I do enjoy the critique the author is trying to get across, I love that it's subtle and told in a not-shoving-it-down-your-throat and exciting kind of way.
Overall, I recommend this book to those who liked the first book in the series. Although you might be able to jump into this series without having read the first book, I highly recommend you start and the beginning and allow yourself to become completely immersed in the storyline.

The cliffhanger at the end of the first volume was too much for me. So, I had to jump into the next one as soon as was possible. Off to volume 2!The story opens where the first volume left off. A failed bus-jacking leads to Raito getting to know the name of the FBI agent who was following him. That leads to him uncovering the identity of all the other agents posted in Japan. He puts this information to use and forwards it as a challenge for L.
There's the addition of a woman in the game. She is the fiancée of the FBI agent that Raito comes in contact with. And her sole mission is to unravel the mystery behind Kira (the name given to the person responsible for the killings, a.k.a Raito). She comes in contact with Raito while she is in the Police Headquarters and is waiting to give some information regarding the killings. Raito meets her there and engages her into conversation. She introduces herself as Maki Shouko. She seems to have deducted everything correctly with regards to the bus hijacking and has an idea about the identity of Kira and as luck would have it, she divulges this information in front of Raito himself. But there is a shock coming for Raito as he interacts with her. She's smarter than I gave her credit for. (view spoiler)[ Unfortunately, Raito tricks her and she finds her name in the Death Note (hide spoiler)]
L finally reveals his real identity to a very small group of officers including the Chief of Police. The reader gets to meet L for the very first time in the manga series. His quirks, his thought processes are a delight to know about. No one looking at him would ever imagine that the guy is a legendary detective who single-handedly solves difficult cases. But as we should never judge a book by its cover, we should never judge a person by his or her looks. L has a brilliant mind and he keeps going over Raito's plans and the motive behind them. The cat and mouse chase is already so exciting, I can't wait for the other volumes!
L's associate, Watari's identity is also revealed in the book. The prime suspicion lies on the Chief and the Sub-chief's families and there are some measures that need to be taken by L and the other officers to keep tabs on the suspects. Meanwhile, Maki Shouko seems to have disappeared. And L comes to know about it. That becomes an added clue in the puzzle that's getting more complicated by the minute.
What caught me quite by surprise is the change in Raito's character. He started out as an honour student who wanted to do good by ridding the world of evil. But in this volume, he's taking some drastic measures to cover his own tracks with no regard to the lives in his disposal. His primary goal is to be able to conceal his identity so that no one can ever find him out. The thought that has made a permanent place in my mind right now is that he would do well to remember these lines by Friedrich Nietzsche, "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster."
This is going to be GOOD.

As stated by the profile placed at the beginning of each Death Note manga, Ōba collects teacups and develops manga plots while holding his knees on a chair, similar to a habit of L, one of the main characters of the series. There is speculation that Tsugumi Ōba is a pen name and that he is really Hiroshi Gamō. Also that the storyboards drawn by Ōba greatly resemble Tottemo! Luckyman in style.
